She acted as a foster mother to Zeus as a baby when his mother Rhea stowed him away in the mountains of Crete, saving him from being eaten by his father Cronos, who devoured all his babies after birth.

Legend said that as little Zeus played with Amalthea he accidentally broke off one of her horns, which he then transformed into Cornucopia the horn of plenty. He got the tail of a fish due to his desire to run away and the head of a goat with horns so that he could fight the monster and save his master from certain death.

Zeus then used his lightening to strike down the Typhon, injured in its fight with Bacchus. We also get the names of five meteor showers from the constellation.
