Itineraries built around going to different sites and experiencing different activities provide structure to a trip. They punctuate the trip. But through them all, and tying them all together, is the underlying experience of the place. That is what really counts. It is absorbed throughout all of the marking points of the itinerary and in all the moments in between. Tour operators have learned that what is best about a place is right there in front of you all the time in every part of the place.
The whole, or the essence of the whole, is contained within every part. You absorb it through the whole combination of experiences you have there. And the real marrow of a place is the people. As the National Geographic program World Without Humans showed dramatically, without humans around to maintain its workings, everything we know as civilization, including most of these must-see sights, would crumble rapidly.
If you try to imagine Paris, for example, without the people, it would be strange indeed. Not much of an attraction. Ultimately it is the people that make a place what it is. And again, to return to tour operators, they learned years ago that their profession would not survive if they persisted in basing their tours and travel programs merely on seeing must-see sights and attractions.
What people really want is to get down with the people. Travelers want to interact with people, experience them and their culture, their ways of life. In fact, food tourism has become its own type of travel in recent years and is often a motivating factor in convincing travelers to choose a specific destination. Tourists can even make reservations with food tour companies to get a fully guided experience in foreign cuisine. In order to support tourism, a destination needs to have adequate infrastructure to support a large influx of visitors.
This includes transportation, accommodation, and reliable access to basic utilities like internet, running water, and electricity. The more modern the infrastructure, the more likely tourists will feel comfortable visiting a destination. From mountains to beaches to cityscapes, landscape alone can be enough to draw tourists to a destination. Tourist destinations with landscapes that are considered more attractive are likely to see a higher number of visitors.
Alternatively, destinations that do a poor job of maintaining their landscape may see a decline in tourism as travelers are put off by the quality of their surroundings and decide to go elsewhere.
With the ever-growing popularity of social media, many destinations are learning that their branding efforts are key in competing with other places to attract tourists. All activities involved in these environments include an element of risk, and often include a lot of physical exertion. Tourist activities count as extreme tourism includes rock climbing, white water rafting, bungee jumping, ice walking and paragliding.
Tourism spending in the report refers to money spent on lodging, restaurants, bars, local transportation, entertainment, shopping, gambling and other categories. The major spending item for international visitors is non-specific products, followed by accommodation and tourism-connected products.
